A newly-qualified driver from Ramsey has been fined £200 for exceeding the 50mph ’R’ plate limit.

Declan Owen Coney, aged 20, of Cronk Elfin, admitted the offence and also had his licence endorsed with three penalty points.

His ’R’ plate period, which was due to end in December, was also extended by six months and will now end in June next year.

Prosecutor Rebecca Cubbon told the court that police saw Coney driving on the Mountain Road on April 21 at 2.55pm.

He was in a Ford Fiesta behind two other cars which he overtook at Bungalow bridge.

His speed was exceeding 70mph at the time of the manoeuvre.

The court heard that he has no previous convictions.

Apology

Defence advocate Winston Taylor said: ’Mr Coney wants to say he is sorry for not observing the speed limit.

’He was given a fixed penalty notice to pay £120 but upheaval in his life contributed to him not dealing with it.’

Magistrates also ordered Coney to pay £50 prosecution costs and he was given 14 days to pay all amounts.

Chairman of the magistrates Michael Murley told Coney: ’R plates are there for the safety of yourself and everybody else on the road.’
