Learner drivers should refrain from going out on the roads just because they are quiet, police have urged.

A police spokesman said: ’If you are a learner driver and you have an "essential" journey to undertake with a qualified passenger from your household, then this is permitted although we would prefer only experienced drivers on the road at this time.

’We know people need to learn but at this present time we ask that common sense prevails and the roads are kept as clear as possible.’
