A 22-year-old pizza delivery driver has been fined £550 and banned from driving for six months for two motoring offences.

Nedelina Filipova, of Mona Drive, Douglas, admitted driving without insurance and having a vehicle in a dangerous condition.

Prosecuting advocate Rachael Braidwood told how police were called to Prospect Terrace in Douglas on February 18 after a report of a Volkswagen Golf in a poor condition.

Filipova was seen driving it and was subsequently stopped.

The vehicle was seized due to its poor condition and later found to have numerous defects by a vehicle examiner who deemed it unroadworthy.

Filipova told police she was working as a pizza delivery driver but checks found her vehicle was not insured for this.

The court heard she has no previous convictions.

Defence advocate David Clegg said that the car had since been scrapped and his client was now working in alternative employment.

Mr Clegg said: ’Ms Filipova is Bulgarian. She says until she spoke to police she wasn’t aware separate insurance was required.

’The system in Bulgaria is different.

’Her deliveries were all in the Douglas area, all in 30mph areas. She is not mechanically astute and said the vehicle had been to a garage a few months earlier.’

The advocate went on to say Filipova planned to leave the island but remained to deal with court proceedings.

’Some people may have left as it is unlikely they would have been brought back for motoring matters,’ said Mr Clegg.

High Bailiff Jayne Hughes said: ’The vehicle was defective in almost every aspect that it could have been. You should have been aware but your employer should also have checked you were insured to carry out those activities.’
