A prison officer has appeared in court charged with conspiring to bring in a mobile phone to an inmate on remand at Isle of Man prison.

Robert Sewell, aged 29, of Lhoobs Road, Eairy, appeared before High Bailiff Jayne Hughes today (Saturday) in courtroom three at Douglas courthouse.

The father-of-one and former Army officer is charged with conspiring with others to bring in a prohibited article, namely a mobile phone, to the prison.

He is also charged with giving that mobile phone to a man that he knew to be a detainee at the prison.

The offences are alleged to have taken place between August 3 and 14.

Mr Sewell has been suspended on full pay since his arrest on August 13.

He was granted bail with a series of conditions, including not to enter the prison, not to contact prosecution witnesses and to report to police headquarters daily.

The four others facing the conspiracy charge are due to appear in court on Tuesday.

They include two prisoners on remand at the jail.

The Isle of Man is currently featured weekly on prime-time television in ITV’s ’Best Little Prison in Britain?’ documentary.
