A serving prison officer has been charged in connection with an allegation that he conspired to smuggle in a mobile phone to an inmate at Jurby jail.
The man is due to appear in court tomorrow morning (Saturday).
His arrest comes at a time when the Isle of Man Prison is being featured weekly on television in ITV’s Best Little Prison in Britain? documentary.
The prison officer is in police custody ahead of his court appearance tomorrow.
Four others, including two remand prisoners at the jail, have been charged with the same conspiracy offence. They are due to appear in court on Tuesday.
A Home Affairs spokesman confirmed: ’A serving prison officer at Isle of Man Prison in Jurby has been charged with conspiracy and throwing or bringing a prohibited article into an institution and is due to appear at Douglas Courthouse on Saturday August 24.
’The charges follow a joint operation between the prison and the Isle of Man Constabulary. The accused was immediately suspended from duties after being placed on police bail.
’Four others have been charged in connection with the same offence.’
