A Ramsey man has been fined £380 and had his licence endorsed with six penalty points by magistrates for speeding and having no insurance.
Mathew Stephen Sherry, 34, of Princes Road, admitted the offences and was also ordered to pay £50 prosecution costs.
The court heard how, on August 6, police were performing speed checks outside the Grove Museum in Ramsey.
At 10.40am, Sherry was recorded driving at 40mph in a 30mph zone.
penalty
He was stopped and was initially issued with a fixed penalty notice with an order to produce his insurance within five days. The following day Sherry produced his documents at Ramsey police station however the insurance had a start date of August 7, the day after the offence.
He told police his partner had received the insurance policy in the post and thought that it automatically renewed.
Defending Sherry in court advocate Rebecca Cubbon said: ’Mr Sherry didn’t think that he had to take active steps, he thought the insurance renewed automatically. Unfortunately that was not the case.
’He is quite upset he has been driving uninsured as he takes his daughter with him in the car.’
Ms Cubbon added that Sherry needed his licence for work as he was self-employed.
’It was a genuine mistake,’ said the advocate.
