A 29-year-old man has pleaded guilty in court to a total of 14 offences.

David William Atkinson, of no fixed abode, had already pleaded guilty on a previous court appearance to three offences of taking a vehicle without consent, having no driving licence and having no insurance, relating to a Mercedes, as well as four separate charges of property damage.

In court on Tuesday, he racked up seven more offences, relating to a scooter, pleading guilty to driving without due care and attention, failing to stop after an accident, failing to report an accident, having no driving licence, having no insurance, failing to notify a change of ownership and having no vehicle licence.

Addressing the latest offences, prosecutor Mark Benson told the court how, on January 7 at 4.45pm, police were called to Ballaquayle Road in Douglas following a report a scooter had struck a parked Vauxhall Insignia.

The court heard how Atkinson was riding the scooter when it slid down the road after the crash.

Seemingly undeterred, he then got back on and rode away.

The wife of the owner of the Insignia was in the passenger seat when Atkinson hit the car.

She was not injured but the car sustained rear offside damage and the registration plate from the scooter Atkinson was riding was lying in the road.

Police went to the address to which the scooter was registered, but the occupant said that they had sold the scooter in June 2016 and could not remember who had bought it.

The scooter was seen again on January 21 in Barrule Road in Willaston but the rider had still not been identified.

On February 8 Atkinson went to police headquarters and admitted that he was the rider.

In a police interview he admitted riding off after the crash and having no insurance or licence.

He said that he had decided to attend police headquarters because he was concerned about the passenger in the car.

Defending Atkinson in court, advocate Paul Glover said: ’While on remand my client has spoken to a doctor and the Drug and Alcohol Team and will continue to engage with them.

’He was going through a difficult time, particularly with his ex-partner.’

A bail application was refused by Deputy High Bailiff Jayne Hughes. Atkinson was remanded in custody and will be sentenced on April 4.
