A woman from Port Erin who stole wine from a supermarket has been fined £300.
Stephanie Marie Newton, of Edremony Estate, admitted the theft and was also ordered to pay £7.50 compensation to the store.
Prosecuting advocate Hazel Carroon told the court that, on April 19, Newton, who is 37, was seen on CCTV footage putting a bottle of wine in her handbag at Shoprite in Port Erin, then leaving the shop without paying.
She was interviewed by police voluntarily on April 20 and said she could not recall the incident.
Newton said she had taken twice the amount of her prescription medication on the day and was ’not with it at all’.
After being shown the CCTV footage she maintained that she could not remember going to Shoprite.
Defence advocate Jim Travers asked for credit to be given for his client’s guilty plea.
He said: ’Ms Newton told the police she was willing to return to the store and make payment but was told not to do so. She is still willing to do so.
’She has referenced "having a bad day", and has perhaps acted in a fashion she otherwise wouldn’t have done.
’It was a very very low-level offence and a non-vulnerable victim.’
Newton was also ordered by magistrates to pay £50 prosecution costs and will pay all amounts at a rate of £10 per week deducted from benefits.
