Smoke coming from a damaged mobile phone led to a high school being evacuated today.

Fire crews from Peel station along with appliances from Douglas and Kirk Michael were mobilised by the emergency services joint control room to a report of smoke in a classroom at Queen Elizabeth II High School in Peel.

A fire spokesman said: ’Upon arrival the Officer-in-Charge quickly liaised with staff on scene and ascertained that a classroom on the first floor was smoke logged due to a damaged mobile phone and all staff and pupils had safely evacuated.

’Fire crews wearing breathing apparatus gained access to the classroom and removed the damaged mobile phone before the area was ventilated using a positive pressure ventilation fan.’

He added that the school reacted correctly to the incident and everyone was evacuated in a clam and proper manner by the time the emergency services were arriving.

It was also confirmed that the phone was a heavily damaged one and was not due to a fault with a specific type of phone.
