A speeding driver slammed so hard into the back of queuing traffic the end car was shunted forward hitting a second car in front of it.

Douglas magistrates were told Emanuel Jay Kaneen, was seen by a witness speeding along Quarterbridge Road towards the traffic lights at the bottom of Bray Hill.

But the 22-year-old was caught out by traffic queuing towards the lights and despite slamming his brakes on was unable to stop in time. His Renault Clio hit the back of a Peugeot, which, in turn, was shunted into the back of a Mercedes, slightly injuring its passenger.

Accident investigators said Kaneen, of Maylorie House, Laxey, could not have been travelling at less than 43mph. No defects were found on his car.

Defending Kaneen, who admitted careless driving on April 10, David Clegg said his client was caught out by the gradient of the road and inadvertently speeded up.

Deputy High Bailiff Jayne Hughes fined him £500 with seven penalty points and £50 costs.
