A 30-year-old man accused of being involved in a stabbing in Ramsey has appeared in court via video link from the prison.

Stephen Paul Binding, of Mooragh Promenade, is charged with two counts of unlawfully and maliciously wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and one count of property damage. He is yet to enter pleas to the charges.

We previously reported how a female and a policeman were treated in hospital for serious but not life-threatening injuries they each sustained during an alleged struggle with Mr Binding, who was also treated for self-inflicted serious injuries to his neck on September 12.

On Tuesday, Mr Binding was represented in court by advocate Deborah Myerscough who said that her client’s mental health had taken a ’significant downturn’ and that he needed assessment in relation to his fitness to plead.

The advocate said that a psychiatric assessment is due to take place on November 8 and the subsequent report would take up to four weeks to complete after that. Mr Binding is due to be committed to the Court of General Gaol Delivery on November 23 and the case was adjourned until then.

High Bailiff Jayne Hughes said that committal would either take place on that date or if not, an update from the doctor could be provided.

No bail application was made and he is remanded in custody.
