A teenager who threw confectionery around a shop causing £60 worth of damage has been convicted of property damage and provoking behaviour.

Rosemary Burgess, of Princes Avenue, Douglas, was angry after being asked to leave Mace Stores in Bathurst Street.

The 18-year-old admitted both offences and will be sentenced on April 28 after a probation report has been completed.

Prosecuting advocate Hazel Carroon told the court that Burgess entered the shop on March 9.

She was said to have thrown a bar of chocolate and was asked to leave the shop.

Burgess was then said to have got close to the staff member and pointed in their face.

She left with a friend but then returned at 6pm, still disgruntled.

Aggressive

Her friend was refused a sale of crisps and this angered Burgess further, who said: ’Why am I barred?’ then became aggressive, making threats to damage the shop.

Staff called the police but Burgess then started throwing items around and was described by the shopkeeper as acting ’possessed’ and ’uncontrollable’.

When interviewed by police the teenager admitted destroying items but said she didn’t see her behaviour as threatening.

Burgess was warned for laughing in court by High Bailiff Jayne Hughes and probation who assessed her on the day said that it was not possible to get a true picture due to her presentation.

Mrs Hughes ordered that the report consider all options including custody.

Bail was granted in the sum of £500 with conditions that she reside at her home address, contact probation, and not leave the island without court consent.
