A teenager has been fined and banned from the roads after he admitted a charge of driving while under the influence of cannabis.

Fintan Maurice McLean, of Falkland Drive, in Onchan, admitted one count of possession of the drug and one count of driving whilst unfit.

He was fined £500 by magistrates and banned from driving for one year.

The ban included an order to retake his test at the end of the disqualification period.

The 18-year-old provided a blood sample which showed 2.5 micrograms of the drug per litre of blood.

There is no Manx legal limit but in the UK, the legal limit is 2 micrograms. Prosecutor Rebecca Cubbon told the court that McLean was stopped by police on Ballafletcher Road in Douglas on May 11 while driving a Hyundai Getz.

Police said the vehicle had been swerving in the road slightly and that McLean’s pupils were enlarged and his skin was pale. He was found to have a grinder and £1.15 worth of cannabis.

But he admitted that he had ingested more of the drug when he was pulled over.

Defence advocate Jane Gray said that her client, a delivery driver, had no previous convictions.

Ms Gray handed in a reference from McLean’s employer and it was said the company would try to deploy him in another role.

A letter written by McLean was also handed in, in which he said that he had started using cannabis after his mother suffered ill health.

McLean said that he had self-referred to Motiv8.
