A teenager from St Jude’s has been fined £550 after admitting six driving-related offences.

Callan Kevin McPhillips, aged 18, admitted having no insurance, a licence offence, having no vehicle licence, failing to notify a change of ownership, and two counts of having a defective tyre.

His licence was endorsed with eight penalty points.

Prosecutor James Robinson said the police saw McPhillips driving a 4x4 vehicle at Victoria Street in Douglas on October 24 at 2.30am.

Checks revealed his tax had expired in February 2018 and he was subsequently stopped.

McPhillips told officers: ’I’ll be honest, I don’t have a licence or insurance and it’s not taxed.’

Despite only holding a provisional licence he did not have a supervising driver or ’L’ plates displayed. The vehicle was taken to the test centre and found to have defective tyres and was not registered to McPhillips.

Advocate Jane Gray said: ’This has been a very sobering experience. It is the first time Mr McPhillips has been in trouble with the police.

’He says he bought the vehicle some months beforehand and was looking to repair it. It was sat in the yard at his farm for some time.’

Ms Gray said McPhillips had taken the vehicle out after having a row with his girlfriend but had come to his senses and was about to drive home when he was stopped.
