A teenage shoplifter who stole alcohol from Shoprite twice in a day has been fined £300.
Dylan Briggs, of Hope Terrace, St John’s, pleaded guilty to two counts of theft and was also ordered to pay £16 compensation to Shoprite.
Prosecuting advocate Barry Swain told the court that Briggs first went into the Michael Street store in Peel at 5.25pm on October 26.
The 18-year-old was with two juveniles and was captured on CCTV, which was viewed later, putting a bottle of peach schnapps into his jacket and leaving without paying.
Before that theft had been discovered Briggs went back into the shop and this time put two bottles of Blackthorn cider into his jacket as well as coke and lemonade before leaving.
Briggs was arrested on October 31 in relation to another matter and the thefts came to light. The schnapps was valued at £6, the cider at £6, and the coke and lemonade at £4.
Defence advocate David Reynolds said: ’The offences come down to a lack of maturity.
’He accepts he mixes with the wrong crowd and allows himself to be misled. Boredom appears to have been an issue and he was under the influence of alcohol.’
Mr Reynolds went on to say that his client had worked in a chip shop for three years and rarely drank alcohol.
’He wants to make sure he doesn’t become a regular person before the courts,’ said the advocate.
Magistrates also ordered Briggs to pay £50 prosecution costs which he will pay, along with the fine, at a rate of £20 per week.
