A teenager who stole a charity jar during a burglary has been sentenced to community service and probation.

Connor Samuel Hall, of Saddle Road, Douglas, admitted an offence of burglary theft, committed at Mother T’s in Laxey.

High Bailiff Jayne Hughes sentenced the 17-year-old to 12 months’ probation plus 80 hours of community service.

We previously reported that 20-year-old Brooke Alayna Byron, aged 20, of Alder Road, Pulrose, was sentenced to 60 hours of community service and put on probation for 12 months for her part in the burglary.

On Tuesday, prosecutor Rebecca Cubbon told the court that the glass donations jar at Mother T’s, which contained between £200 and £300, was stolen overnight on May 13.

The jar was found smashed but when Hall was interviewed he initially denied taking part in the burglary.

He said that coins found on him were from him saving up and that he was going to pay them into the bank but the bank was closed.

Hall then said that he had been taking drugs and felt dizzy and dazed.

He was interviewed again on a later date and admitted climbing a ladder then getting into Mother T’s through an open window.

He said he had dropped the jar as he was leaving with a friend causing it to smash.

A probation report said that Hall was currently attending University College Isle of Man and was being supported by the drug and alcohol team.

Defence advocate Peter Taylor said: ’Mr Hall met up with some older friends.

’Obviously one will say it is the other’s fault.

’He clearly sees two paths now, a path that leads to Jurby and a path where he becomes a productive member of society.’

The court heard that a previous combination order imposed in July had not started yet, through no fault of Hall, and Mrs Hughes said that she would be making inquiries as to why this had not been started.
