A Douglas teenager has been fined £100 by magistrates for possessing about £25-worth of cannabis.

Ross James McWhinnie, of Holly Grove, admitted the offence and was also ordered to pay costs of £125.

The court heard McWhinnie is currently subject to a two-year suspended sentence for driving offences but magistrates decided not to activate this, saying this was his last warning.

Prosecutor James Robinson told the court how, on February 4 at 8pm, police attended a flat at Palace View Terrace in Douglas acting on information received.

A smell of cannabis was said to be coming from the flat and smoke was seen coming out of a room.

The court heard there was a young child asleep in another room at the time.

The 18-year-old told police: ’Yes it’s just me I have some weed. I have been smoking out the window. I had two joints after the kid went to bed.’

Defence advocate David Clegg said his client had a job offer to work as a labourer.

’He is a young man who needs a bit more purpose in his life,’ he said.

Mr Clegg said McWhinnie was in his partner’s flat at the time of the offence.

’He should have known better in terms of smoking it in someone else’s property,’ said Mr Clegg. ’He didn’t require an advocate at the station because he just said he was going to tell the truth.’
