Police arrested a teenager after they smelt cannabis in his car, a court heard this week.

Edard Dolyn Corkill, of Main Road, Santon, admitted possessing cocaine and cannabis when he appeared before the Deputy High Bailiff.

He was committed to the Court of General Gaol Delivery, where he will appear on January 28.

The court heard that police stopped the 18-year-old while he was driving a Ford Fiesta on November 11 at 8.20pm on Malew Road in Castletown.

His vehicle licence was said to have expired on September 30 and a smell of cannabis was emanating from the car.

A joint was found in the footwell of the car and Corkill was asked if he had anything else in the vehicle.

He admitted that he had but said that a friend had left the other items and that he would not identify him.

A search of the car found £250 in cash as well as more cannabis.

A later search of Corkill’s home address found more of the drug, along with a bag containing cocaine.

The cannabis was valued at £316, while the cocaine was said to be worth £40.

When interviewed Corkill answered ’no comment’ to all questions.

The case was deemed suitable for summary court but must go to the higher court as the £250 cash can be confiscated only by an order of that court under the Proceeds of Crime Act.

Defence advocate Paul Glover said that his client had stated that the £250 did not relate to crime.

Deputy High Bailiff Jayne Hughes asked for a basis of plea to be provided in time for Corkill’s appearance at the higher court and also fined him £100 for the expired licence offence.

Bail was granted in the sum of £500 with conditions that Corkill live at his home address and not leave the island without court permission.
