A teenager from Port Erin has been handed a two-year conditional discharge for drug possession.

Ryan Kyle Shaw, aged 18, of Magherchirrym, admitted possessing 11.4 grams of cannabis worth £228 and 15 Alprazolam tablets, worth £5 each.

The court heard how Shaw was a passenger in a Mini Cooper on August 13 at 2am.

The car was stopped after reports of erratic driving.

In a police interview Shaw said the drugs were for self medication.

Defence advocate Rebecca Cubbon asked for credit to be given for her client’s guilty plea.

She said: ’Mr Shaw pointed out to the officers the backpack was his, knowing it contained the items. He knows he has let himself and his family down.

’It has been a very turbulent year for him. His grandma passed away and he has been struggling to deal with grief. He perhaps made wrong choices and was in the wrong crowd.

’He is not someone who is going to be troubling the courts in the future.’

Deputy High Bailiff Jayne Hughes also ordered that Shaw pay £125 prosecution costs
