A teenage visitor has been jailed for eight weeks for driving while disqualified.
George Donnachie, aged 19, of Hawkshead Street, Blackburn, Lancashire, admitted the offence as well as one of having no insurance and was also disqualified from driving for 12 months.
Prosecutor Rachael Braidwood told the court that Donnachie was stopped at the Sea Terminal on December 21.
Checks revealed that he had been disqualified from driving for six months in October 2017 and the vehicle was listed as stolen.
He was arrested but told police he had consumed a large amount of drugs including ecstasy and heroin and was taken to Noble’s Hospital.
Tests proved negative for drugs and he was then taken to police headquarters where he handed in a prepared statement saying he had arrived in the island on the Wednesday from Heysham and stayed at a hotel. He said that he had borrowed the Nissan from a friend in UK and didn’t know it was stolen.
Defence advocate Paul Glover asked for credit to be given for his client’s guilty pleas. ’No concerns were raised regarding his driving whilst on the island,’ he said. ’He was only in the island for a short period of time.’
Deputy High Bailiff Jayne Hughes sentenced Donnachie to eight weeks for the driving whilst disqualified offence. There was no separate penalty for the insurance offence.
A charge of possession of articles for use in fraud was withdrawn.
