A teenager was last week convicted of assaulting his mother and younger brother.

Nathan Owen Briggs, of Mooragh Promenade, Ramsey, admitted common assault and common assault on a boy under 14 years.

The 19-year-old will be sentenced on August 6 after a probation report has been prepared.

Prosecutor James Robinson told the court that police were called to an address at Hope Street in St John’s on June 5.

Briggs was said to have taken his mother’s phone after a verbal altercation.

His mother said they had argued after Briggs has asked her for money for a deposit for a flat.

He was said to have grabbed his mother’s wrist and hit it against a wall.

She called the police but as she did, Briggs was said to have argued with his younger brother and then grabbed him by the throat and pinned him against a wall. Briggs was arrested and when interviewed he denied the assaults but admitted taking the phone.

He claimed his mother had been pushing him and that he had pushed her arm away.

Briggs said that he had been trying to calm his younger brother down and denied pinning him against the wall.

The court heard that Briggs was previously sentenced to community service for affray in July 2018.

High Bailiff Jayne Hughes ordered that a probation report be prepared as the latest offences put Briggs in breach of the community service order.

Mrs Hughes said that the report should consider all options, including custody.

Bail was granted with conditions that Briggs live at his home address, contact probation, and not leave the island.
