TT week festivities got out of hand for one man, who ended up having to be restrained using Pava spray after running from police.

The court heard that Richard Terrance Thwaites, of St George’s Terrace, Douglas, had started drinking on Senior Race day and continued into the small hours of the Saturday when he was arrested.

The 24-year-old, who last week admitted being drunk and disorderly, will be sentenced on July 31 after a probation report has been completed.

Magistrates heard how, on June 9 at 2.40am, Thwaites was seen by police on Church Street, Douglas, swearing loudly. He was then seen to punch a man and was arrested. Thwaites ran away from police and hid under a vehicle. He was found but escaped again before being caught.

Thwaites was said to have struggled, kicking out at police and pulling his arms away, so Pava spray was used to restrain him.

Defence advocate Matthew Wilshaw said: ’Once he had sobered up he was co-operative. Mr Thwaites had been enjoying the last of the TT week festivities.

’He began drinking on Senior Race day and carried on into the early hours.

’A group began to wind him up and he has taken matters into his own hands. When told he was being arrested he made the rather foolish decision to try to make a run for it. We can’t dispute alcohol is at the root of this offence.’

Magistrates said the probation report should consider all sentencing options, including custody. Bail was granted.
