A 38-year-old has been fined £1,000 for five driving-related offences.

Jason Harold Redford, of Albert Street, Ramsey, admitted speeding, failing to conform to a traffic direction, having a vehicle in a dangerous condition, and two counts of having a defective tyre.

Magistrates also endorsed Redford’s licence with seven penalty points.

Two counts of driving without insurance and two of failing to produce insurance were withdrawn by the prosecution.

Prosecutor Barry Swain told the court that police were driving behind Redford on February 17 while he was in a Ford Escort van at Avondale Road in Onchan.

He was travelling at 50mph in a 30mph zone and then went through a red light at the Manx Arms pub.

He was stopped and told police he was taking his boss to the airport but was a ’bit lost’.

His passenger confirmed the story and police allowed Redford to continue his journey but told him to stop at police headquarters on his way back.

But Redford failed to do so and police then called at his house.

He told them that his phone battery had died so he had been unable to contact them.

On August 26 at 8.30am police stopped Redford while he was driving the same van at the Bungalow tram crossing on the Mountain Road. He told police it belonged to his employer.

The van was said to be in a poor condition and was subsequently taken to the vehicle test centre.

Numerous defects were found, including two tyres that were below the legal tread limit.

Defence advocate Paul Rodgers said: ’Mr Redford fully apologises to the court. He made a mistake.

’He accepts if he’s driving a vehicle he’s responsible for its maintenance.’

Magistrates fined Redford £200 for speeding, £200 for failing to conform to a traffic direction, £150 for each defective tyre, and £300 for having a vehicle in a dangerous condition.

He must also pay £100 prosecution costs and will pay the fine and costs at a rate of £20 per week.
