Bomb squad officers have been called in after a suspected wartime shell was discovered in an outbuilding of a home on Howe Road, Port St Mary.

Police said the unused shell possibly dates from the First World War.

The Army’s explosive ordnance disposal unit are due to arrive in the island on Tuesday.

Several agencies including Civil Defence, the Coastguard and police oficers are guarding the scene until the Bomb Squad gets here to ensure the shell is not moved.

Police said there is no immediate risk to the public.
