A 25-year-old Douglas man has been fined £100 for possessing £12-worth of cannabis.

Toby James Cross, of York Road, admitted the offence and was also ordered to pay £125 costs by magistrates.

The court heard that Cross was stopped by police while driving on January 23 at 1.45pm at Main Road in Laxey.

Police found a rucksack containing 0.4 grams of cannabis, valued at £12.

Prosecuting advocate Roger Kane said it was surprising the case had come to court and police had not offered an alternative disposal to Cross.

Defence advocate Kate Alexander asked for credit to be given for her client’s co-operation during the search and admissions to police.

Ms Alexander said that Cross had spent almost 12 hours in custody for what was a fairly modest matter and had no previous drug-related convictions.

Magistrates chair David Craine said: ’We are surprised that this low level offence has resulted in it coming to court.’

Magistrates ordered the teenager to pay the fine at a rate of £50 per week.
