A 33-year-old Douglas man has been jailed after smashing a window in what he said was a revenge attack.
Matthew David Joseph Prendergast, of Wesley Terrace, admitted an offence of property damage which was committed while he was subject to a suspended sentence imposed for drug possession in June.
Prendergast is also currently on licence after being released early from a five-and-a-half-year sentence for drug trafficking, imposed in 2016.
High Bailiff Jayne Hughes sentenced him to two months custody for the criminal damage offence and activated the four month suspended sentence in full, bringing Prendergast’s total sentence to six months in custody.
No action was taken in relation to the sentence Prendergast was released early from.
We previously reported how police were called to a flat in Mona Street in Douglas on July 21 at 5.37pm.
A report had been received of five males outside the flat, one with a bat.
A window in the ground floor flat had been smashed.
Prendergast was spoken to by police at his home and arrested after he was identified as the man with the bat.
Defence advocate David Clegg said: ’This matter has come in the context of some individuals targeting Mr Prendergast and throwing a rock through his window so he has responded.
’On the day, he responded to bullying. He regrets doing so. It is not the most serious of criminal damage offences.’
Mr Clegg went on to say that Prendergast is working with the Drug and Alcohol Team (DAT) and had been unable to have face to face meeting with probation during the Covid-19 restrictions.
High Bailiff Jayne Hughes told Prendergast: ’The fact this was a revenge attack is an aggravating factor. You armed yourself with a bat. You should have called the police but you took the law into your own hands.’
