A Castletown woman who claimed income support and incapacity benefits while working as a care worker has been sentenced to community service.
Toni-Marie Cowell, aged 31, of Ellerslie Gardens, admitted benefit fraud worth £4,118.
She was ordered to do 80 hours of unpaid work by magistrates when she appeared before them for sentencing on Thursday.
Prosecutor Barry Swain told the court how, Cowell was claiming benefits since December 2016.
However, between August 6 and August 20, 2017, and October 15, 2017 and January 27, 2018, she failed to tell the authorities she was working for Home Care Limited.
Mr Swain said that Cowell had begun paying back the benefits and currently owed £3,906.57.
Defence advocate Deborah Myerscough said: ’This is a lady who admitted the offences to the Treasury officer and has made efforts to repay the money.
’She has apologised in writing and asked me to apologise to the court.
’She is trying to get herself back on her feet. She has had health issues but is working her way through them.’
