A woman who was sentenced to eight weeks’ prison on March 23 was apparently living the high life as a free spirit just 48 hours later.
Susan Janet Moore admitted wasting police time and was jailed by Douglas magistrates on March 23.
But by March 25, she was posting on social media site Facebook about buying herself lunch, having already been released. The post reads: ’Karma is only a bitch if you are. Time for Starbucks lunch.’
It is accompanied by a photograph of an empty wrapper from the coffee shop chain.
After being questioned about the matter by Isle of Man Newspapers, neither prison governor Bob McColm nor any member of the Department of Home Affairs, which is in charge of prisons, would provide any comment.
However, during Mrs Moore’s sentencing, the court was told she ’suffers from a range of medical conditions’ and it is understood this was the reason for her release, based on medical advice. At one court appearance Mrs Moore appeared in court using a wheelchair and questions were raised over her fitness to serve a prison sentence.
The prison governor has a legal right to permit the release of a prisoner, on licence, in exceptional circumstances. Risk assessments are carried out and prisoners were sometimes released on licence from Victoria Road, for example, when this was necessitated by lack of space.
Prisoners who breach the terms of their licence can be taken back into custody.
Prisoners’ health care is provided by a doctors’ practice in Ramsey but there are no in-patient facilities at the prison and the only overnight cover is via the Manx Emergency Doctor Service (MEDS).
Mrs Moore, who is 40, and her partner, 27-year-old Daniel Sydney Andrews, both of Albany Road in Douglas, each received prison sentences for their part in concocting a story for police to conceal who was responsible for an assault.
Andrews was sentenced to two weeks’ custody for his part in the affair, which dates back to June last year when the pair had a row after an evening out drinking in the Terminus Tavern and Queen’s Hotel on Douglas seafront.
They were visited by another couple and Andrews ended up being knocked unconscious in the garden.
The other couple left and both Moore and Andrews then lied to police about who had been responsible for the assault. Magistrates were told a total of 50 hours’ police time had been wasted by the matter.
Mrs Moore also faced charges in June last year of seriously injuring her estranged husband, Darren, by careless or inconsiderate driving after hitting him with a van then driving off and failing to stop after the incident at Snugborough Trading Estate.
The impact left Mr Moore in a coma with a fractured skull.
She received a four-month prison sentence, suspended for two years and an 18-month driving ban.
The court was told CCTV coverage at the estate showed the van apparently driving straight at Mr Moore but the court accepted Moore’s contention that the impact was entirely unintentional and she did not have time to brake.
Alan Moore, who is unrelated but coincidentally shares the same surname, said his partner was related to Darren Moore and was horrified by the apparent leniency of her treatment.
’As far as we are concerned, the law is an ass. She nearly killed Darren, he nearly died and she should face the consequences,’ he said.
