A 51-year-old woman has been fined £400 after admitting disorderly behaviour on licensed premises.

Tina Louise Groom, of Lheannag Park, Douglas, claimed she had been the subject of vile comments by a man in the Front Porch bar before the incident.

Prosecuting advocate Barry Swain told the court that police were called to Lord Street in Douglas on June 25 at 10pm after a report of fighting.

Groom told police she had been assaulted by the man concerned. He was subsequently arrested.

But after further investigations and viewing CCTV at the Front Porch in Duke Street, Groom was also arrested.

Footage showed the man approaching Groom at the bar while she was with another woman.

Groom was then seen striking him in the face, then trying to land further blows as he left the premises.

He returned briefly but Groom set upon him again before staff intervened.

Groom was interviewed on a voluntary basis but gave ’no comment’ responses to all questions.

Defence advocate Stephen Wood entered a basis of plea on behalf of his client in which Groom said she had been with a woman who had asked her for help in the bar after the man concerned had been horrible to her.

Groom said that the man had then approached her and said: ’You better watch who you open your door to or you’re going to end up getting gang raped.’

She said that he had then put his hand on her which had resulted in her lashing out at him.

Groom also claimed she had been punched in the face by the man and said she was aggrieved that he had not been charged with assault.

Mr Wood said that the man had declined to make any complaint against Groom.

He said: ’This was extreme provocation. But she accepts she shouldn’t have slapped out as she did.’

The court heard that Groom had had no convictions for five years.

She was also ordered by magistrates to pay £50 costs, which she will pay along with the fine at a rate of £50 per month.
