An island visitor who antagonised customers at a late night bar then urinated in his police cell for good measure.

CCTV footage taken at the Piano Bar in the Palace Hotel in Douglas showed 32-year-old Daniel Thomas Kelly accosting different customers apparently trying to provoke a fight with them.

A court in Douglas heard he was seen pushing one man, arguing with two others at the bar, squaring up to one and following another then making as if to punch him.

His antics came to the attention of bouncers who escorted him from the premises at around 3.30am. But when they reached the door and released him, he swung round attempting to strike one member of staff, who dodged the blow which then connected with his colleague.

Barry Swain, for the prosecution, told court no injuries were caused but Kelly was restrained on the ground until police arrived.

He was taken to the police station and put in a cell where he proceeded to perform a starring role on the station’s CCTV system. This recorded him standing on the bed and urinating over the mattress and cell floor, rather than using the toilet provided inside the cell. He then used his bedding to mop up the mess.

Mr Swain said Kelly, of Church Street, Stalybridge, apologised after the March 18 incident and had only hazy memories of what happened.

Defending him, Stephen Wood said Kelly was employed on a lengthy building contract in the island, at the end of which he would return to the UK.

’Alcohol plays too much of a part in his life at the moment and he has spoken to his GP about it,’ he said.

’He would welcome a licensing act ban to bolster his efforts to address this.’

He was fined £600 for disorderly behaviour on licensed premises and £150 for criminal damage, both of which he admitted. He is to pay £65 compensation for the damage and £125 towards prosecution costs. He was also banned from entering licensed premises, buying or being sold alcohol for one year.
