An estimated 150 people visited historic Kentraugh Mill during its open days at the weekend.

The mill, which dates back to the 1500s, was one of over 100 mills that once operated on the island. Experts believe that at one time most of the island’s farms were never more than two miles from a mill to which they could take their grain harvest.

Kentraugh Mill was abandoned in 1943 when it is thought the miller was no longer able to recruit young men to work there because of the war. It was later restored by the father of its current owner.
