DQ Advocates is launching an initiative to give students the chance to get a taste of life in a busy law firm.

It will be running days this Easter with A-level students from each of the island’s secondary schools offered the opportunity to experience day-to-day life in an active legal environment.

Students will be able to meet and network with representatives across all levels of the firm and explore how their skills and knowledge might apply to the world of law.

They will take part in sessions ranging from a partner firm overview to hearing about the daily life of a trainee and how to succeed with applications and in interviews.

Andrew Harding, director at DQ, said: ‘The insight days are something we are very enthusiastic about. We want to share and provide young people with a strong sense of what it really means to be part of our firm.

‘The ability to meet advocates and learn about the different work they do, providing a platform to develop certain skills such as analysis and debate without the need to know any law before the day, is invaluable.

‘Whether you’ve set your heart on law or are still deciding if it’s the right path for you, this programme should help many students make a decision.’

Andrew went on: ‘We recognise the importance of practical work placement for those considering a career in law but also realise it is increasingly difficult to obtain relevant legal work experience in the Isle of Man.

‘Networking with partners, trainees and our associates via workshops and presentations at the insight days will provide students with the ability to develop connections with advocates and learn how to promote themselves most efficiently.

‘Who knows, it may lead to some applying for our summer internship scheme or boost their CV to obtain other work experience.

‘All in all, this is a great opportunity for A-level students to discover if our culture and working environment is right for them, meet our team and get a feel for the kind of challenges they could be taking on full-time.’

Insight days will be run during the Easter holidays with up to 10 students from each school invited.

l Applications can be found at dq.im/careers and should be completed and returned to [email protected] by Friday (March 11).
