Dr Helen Pankhurst is coming to the island at the end of April to give a talk about her great, great grandmother Sophia Goulden, her great grandmother Emmeline Pankhurst and her grandmother Sylvia Pankhurst.

She is holding a lecture at the Ballkermeen Studio Theatre, Douglas, on Friday, April 21, starting at 5.30pm.

Tickets cost £10 and includes a wine and canape reception.

The event is being hosted by radio presenters Beth Espey and Christy DeHaven.

Dr Pankhurst, is a senior adviser for Care International, a trustee of Water Aid, Farm Africa and Action Aid and has now become the patron of the Friends of Sophia Goulden.

Manx-born Sophia introduced her family to the women’s rights issue and took them to many meetings to learn about the suffrage movement.

After living in Manchester, she retired back to the Isle of Man where she died and is buried in Braddan Cemetery.

The Friends of Sophia Goulden are fundraising to have a statue erected to her to spearhead an educational campaign with the young people of the island.
