Ever wanted to know your bereen from your brishtag, or your cabban dy hey from your caffee?
There is a chance for all those who would like to find out more about speaking Manx next weekend over a biscuit or cake and a cup of tea or coffee during the annual Cooish Manx language festival.
Ten different events, held from Thursday, 4, to Sunday, 7, November, will celebrate and promote Manx and all the ways people can get involved and learn more themselves.
Included in the many events are pop-up beginner Manx lessons at the Henry Bloom Noble Library, Douglas, on Thursday from 12.15pm and 1.15pm, followed by an ’Oie Foshlit’, an open evening hosted by the pupils of the Bunscoill Ghaelgagh, aimed at parents who are considering sending their kids to the Manx language school.
There will be a Manx language walk on Friday at 10.30am, and a mini-musicians session in Manx, aimed at children under four years, at the House of Manannan, also from 10.30am.
Friday will finish with a family ceili and fireworks night in Port Erin.
’Cooish, Cappan as Croo’ is a pop-in event, held at the at the Corrin Hall in Peel on Saturday, from 11am, with Manx language organisations, craft stalls, refreshments, and the opportunity to meet and chat with other Manx speakers during the day, followed by a night of Manx music and language classes from 7pm.
The festival has been put together by Jeebin, the Manx Language Network, in conjunction with the Manx language community.
’There’s something for everyone at this year’s Cooish,’, said Ruth Keggin Gell, Manx Language Development Officer for Culture Vannin.
’Whether you’re a supporter of the language, a beginner, or someone who has been speaking Manx for years.
’Events have been organised by different groups and individuals in the Manx language community, and it’s brilliant to see such a wide range of activities on offer, for all age groups and across the island.
’If you can’t make any of the events, lots of Manx language projects will also be launched during the Cooish, so keep your eyes out for those.
’We want to encourage everyone to get involved in the Cooish.
’The Manx language is for all!’
