When you build your business around the idea of transparent, competitive pricing and great customer service it’s really no surprise when it does well.

In the case of Quayside Tyre and Service Centre the growth of the business has meant them moving from their previous premises on the main road running along South Quay into a brand new, purpose-built premises just around the corner in South Quay Industrial Estate.

Dean Harrison, who set up the company in 2010 with his wife Jane, says: ’The whole concept of the business is to treat people as we want to be treated ourselves and that seems to work.

Dean and Jane’s two sons, Glenn and Nathan, also work in the business, delivering the day to day operation, along with six other employees.

Quayside has four fully qualified vehicle technicians with over 50 years’ experience collectively, two apprentice technicians and two fast fit technicians.

’All the staff are the company’s biggest asset: such a fantastic, honest team,’ says Dean.

As well as new equipment and great working conditions for the team, the new location offers plenty of dedicated parking for customers and a comfortable waiting area offering the best coffee on the island through Coffee Mann.

Dean says the whole team take a real pride in their new surroundings and none more so than his son, Glen, who was responsible for the design of the waiting area: ’It makes it feel like you’re sitting in a home while you’re waiting for your car,’ Glen says.

As the name reflects, Quayside Tyre and Service Centre moved from being a fastfit operation into a full mechanical and technical workshop six years ago and the equipment and credentials are excellent.

The new building has been fitted with additional new ramps and the latest, dealer-level diagnostic equipment.

The company has an association with HIQ, a Goodyear Dunlop product and is a main dealer for Goodyear Dunlop. Although an independently owned business this gives them access to policies and procedures which reflect best practice throughout the industry and can offer warranty approved servicing through the HIQ brand.

This is important in a sector where there are no mandatory requirements or minimum qualifications and customers can find it hard to be sure of the standard of expertise their car will receive. Dean himself is a Fellow of the Institute of the Motor Industry.

And there are also plans to buy the latest DPF (diesel particulate filter) machines which clean and remove the carbon build-up from engines and clean the DPF filters. This is especially effective for vehicles that are only driven on the island and don’t often get a long run at higher speeds to clear the carbon away.

Glen says: ’We’re aware that there isn’t so much choice on the island - there’s only so many places customers can go - so we’re constantly trying to think of new ideas. We’re just trying to give them the best service we can.’

Quayside’s very useful website has lots of information about choosing and getting the most out of your tyres and there’s a comprehensive list of everything they undertake to do when you bring your vehicle in for a service. The website also offers customers the convenience of being able to book a service, vehicle repair or tyre fitting online, as well as by phone, but an appointment isn’t always necessary. Customers can still bring their vehicles in without an appointment to have their tyres checked, or if they have a puncture, and we’ll do everything we can to fit them in as quickly as possible.

Any customer who leaves their car to have work done can ask to book one of the five courtesy vehicles. Or, if it’s easier, one of the team may be able to pick up a customer’s vehicle from their home or work.

The team at Quayside effectively do everything they can to make the experience as easy as possible for the customer.

The online booking system links into a database which can track such things as whether a part that needs replacing on a customer’s car is still under warranty

’On the Isle of Man there is no MOT so the onus lies with the owner to have their car maintained. The people who come here want to look after their car and want to do what we would describe as prevention maintenance. They want to know that, when they get in their car and turn the key, it goes.’

Quayside is a Platinum Partner for Toyo Tyres, the ninth biggest tyre manufacturer in the world. Quayside also deals direct with Michelin, Cooper, Avon, Maxxis and Goodyear Dunlop, with direct accounts are prices are extremely competitive.
