A lifetime spent working with Oasis, Primal Scream and many others has left Alan McGee with a wealth of stories to share.
The iconic figurehead of the UK music industry is to feature in a sit down live interview on Saturday, September 21, in the Promenade Suite in the Villa Marina, from 8pm.
Alan will talk about his time as the legendary band manager, champion and the head of Creation Records, the independent label that launched Oasis and dealt with the warring Gallagher brothers, as well as being home to Primal Scream, My Bloody Valentine and the Jesus and Mary Chain, to name but a few, and will also answer questions from the audience.
He promises the evening will be full of anecdotes and tales of his time spent with some of the most volatile, excessive and unpredictable stars of rock and roll.
’I’ve been surrounded by lunatics all my life, so I have some pretty decent stories to tell,’ said Alan.
’I guess people are more interested in the music more than they are of me, and it’s good to hear the stories from someone who was right there in the middle of it.
’But also people are kind of perplexed by me, I guess. ’They want to know how a guy from Glasgow like me could end up being involved with all these massive bands, had a hand in making these hit songs, and that I’m still going and working now.’
Although Creation ceased to exist in 1999, Alan continues to manage bands such as the Hives and now runs Creation Management, where he looks after musicians such as Shaun Ryder and Wilko Johnson.
He is in the middle of a tour of interview shows, and he said that there is a lot of interest in hearing his stories first-hand.
’I enjoy doing them, and I now do about 50 or so shows a year,’ he said.
’Basically, it is like a big podcast, where I have a chat with an interviewer for around 45 minutes, and then I answer questions from the crowd.
’The shows can take a life of their own, and you never really know where they are going to go.
’Most of the time people want to know stories about Oasis, especially when you get to the north of England. It’s all people want to know about there.
’But people like to hear the behind-the-scenes tales and stories of the mad things that went on, from a personal point of view.
’I don’t know what I’ll be asked about when I get to the Isle of Man.
’To be honest, I’m not even sure exactly where it is, so I’m looking forward to having a look around the place and finding out what there is there. I
’It’ll be interesting to find out what the fans there have to say as well, and what questions you’ll be asking me.’
Tickets to hear Alan McGee are £18, available from the Welcome Centre and the Villa Gaiety box office, and online from villagaiety.com
