The Rotary Club of Rushen and Western Mann has set itself the target of building a viewing platform at Bradda Glen.

If funding can be found, the Rotary Club intends to open the platform overlooking Port Erin bay in the summer of 2023, in time for its 50th anniversary.

The RCRWM said that the project will ’give easy access for people of all abilities and ages to be able to see across Port Erin Bay and beyond to the Calf’.

In its planning application (20/00748/B), the RCRWM said, if approved, it will be a paved viewing platform and glass balustrade including public seating, wildflowers and works to the existing footpath to improve accessibility.

The viewing platform and path would enable people in wheelchairs and families with young children in pushchairs to enjoy the views while the reinforced glass screen around the platform will offer unimpeded views to everyone, regardless of age or mobility.

In 1973 the club’s first community project was the creation of the Bradda Head trail on which the viewing platform will be located.

The application says the RCRWM ’hopes this rotary project will be another lasting legacy benefitting both local people and visitors to the island’.

It added: ’The views from Bradda Head looking back towards Port Erin and out to the Calf of Man are among the finest in Britain - if not the world.

’The proposal would open up these views to everyone, able bodied and disabled, young and old, locals and visitors. The applicant wants people from all over the world to enjoy this outstanding natural beauty spot for years to come.

’Through this project, Rotary will create a lasting legacy for the community of today and tomorrow, just as William Milner did in the 19th century.’

To complete the project, the RCRWM will need to raise the funds, anyone who wishes to contribute to this is asked to contact [email protected].
