Designs created by young local artist Anna Wilson have been selected to feature on gateway bollards installed during the Douglas Promenade refurbishment scheme.

More than 30 entries were received following an invitation to submit designs in November.

Arts Council chairman Marlene Maska MLC, arts development manager Jane Corkill, Emma Callin, who runs the Villa-Gaiety, and Keith Podmore from the Department of Infrastructure comprised the judging panel.

The bollards will indicate the entrance points to the low traffic speed area, at the southern end of Loch Promenade and the northern end of Harris Promenade.

Made of granite, they will be 1.4 metres tall and have an embossed Celtic knot design on the top. Each of the four bollards will feature two side panels, 20cm wide and 80cm tall, which will carry the winning designs.

Anna, aged 23 from Lezayre, graduated in interior architecture and Design and works as an architectural illustrator for a local building and development company as well as undertaking private commissions for local architects and developers.

She said: ’I am so pleased to win this competition and to be able to create eight pieces of artwork for the gateway bollards as part of the Douglas Promenade refurbishment. Each bollard will have a different interpretation of a common theme and I hope that my artwork will be enjoyed by everyone who views it into the future.’

Mrs Maska said: ’We were delighted to work with Douglas Promenade team on this exciting project.

There were some excellent entries to this competition but Anna’s work stood out, not only for the conceptual ideas, but her clear vision for how all eight panels should look.’
