After more than 40 years, Jurby Junk is officially confined to the pages of history.
The store closed in September and this week, Chrystals Auctions held a two day sale of all remaining stock.
With at least 800 lots in the sales list, many including several items ranging from DVDs to glassware and magnets to Santa hats, the number of items ran into the hundreds of thousands.
The sale, overseen by Murray Keefe, attracted a handful of people to the auction house, with most bids coming online.
The online bidders included ones who battled over a Stargate DVD collection which eventually sold for £34.
Two collections of Victorian effect candle stick holders fetched a combined total of £50.
Amusing postcards from the island’s past were also sold with boxes going for between £5 and £40 a box. A collection of Rumpy the Cat money boxes sold for £18.
And a box of motorsport toys including cars and bikes sold for £20.
Owner of Jurby Junk Stella Pixton has been keen throughout the closing of the store to state she is not retiring.
Rather, she has called the closure ’a new beginning’ for her as it it will allow her to focus on her writing, including working towards finishing her second book.
However, as the Isle of Man frequently shows, place names like Derby Castle, the Villiers and White City survive long after the buildings were gone.
Jurby Junk may be closed, but the island’s most famous store will surely live on in name.
