Madcap boating enthusiasts will take to the water again on Saturday as the annual World Tin Bath Championships return to Castletown Harbour.

This will be the 46th year the now legendary event, which starts at 3pm and also includes snake races, flying attempts and catwalk stunts, has been held.

This year’s Tin Bath Championship will see 65 competitors battling it out with men’s champion Thomas Parry and 18-times ladies’ winner Erika Cowen defending their titles.

Also up for grabs will be the Manx National Snake Race Championship which sees teams of six people perched in inner tubes joined together, paddle down the harbour. Last year’s winners Swim Tech will be hoping to retain their title.

During the afternoon, birdmen and women will also make attempts at man (and women)-powered flight. Best attempt scoops a prize of £250, to go to a charity of the winner’s choice.

Castletown Silver Band will play from 2pm and Port St Mary Lifeboat will be on hand to rescue any competitors doing Titanic impressions.

There will also be slapstick stunts and family entertainment with proceeds going to local charities.

The event has become so popular that organisers, the Castletown Ale Drinkers’ Society, has been asked to travel to a festival in England organised by BBC Radio presenter Chris Evans.

The group will provide guidance for anyone who wants to try out tin bath racing at Evans’ Carfest North at Bolesworth Estate in Cheshire, which takes place from July 28 to 30. The prestigious festival features bands such as Manic Street Preachers and Kaiser Chiefs.
