The sale of an historic navigation light is expected to be go through at last, four years after it was put on the market.
The Winkie Light at the Point of Ayre was offered for sale in 2015 with offers invited in the region of £10,000.
Beach Buddies launched a fundraiser to purchase Winkie as a location for its northern base but were out-bid.
But the sale to the winning bidder didn’t complete due to uncertainty over the ownership of the land.
Commissioners of the Northern Lighthouse Board have now applied to the Land Registry to be registered as the full owner of the property.
A spokesman for Northern Lighthouse Board explained: ’NLB put Winkie up for sale in 2015 but the sale didn’t complete at that time as it wasn’t clear who owned the land the lighthouse is situated on.
’This was because the lighthouse had been moved in the early 1950s but land records didn’t reflect the change.
’The legal work to resolve this matter has taken longer than anticipated to conclude.
’However, now the possessory title application has been submitted and advertised, it is anticipated that this will soon allow the sale to be completed.’
The Winkie Light was designed and built around 1888 by David Alan Stevenson - cousin of Treasure Island author Robert Louis Stevenson, whose grandfather had built the other lighthouse at Point of Ayre back in 1818.
It was automated in 1993 and was decommissioned in 2010.
Winkie certainly has a room with a view, and was marketed by island estate agents Black Grace Cowley as having a ’unique location’ and ’potential historic/novelty interest’.
