The legendary ’Big spud’ competition took place in the west of the island on Thursday.

The annual event is organised by the Cronk-y-Voddy Ploughing Society, as part of a produce show and auction.

The winner of the main competition was Margaret Halsall, who grew a 5.9kg batch of potatoes in a single tub.

Among other produce, Clyde Quine won best in show for his dahlias.

The Sloane family won the prize for the vegetable section with their leeks and Paul Kelly’s chocolate cakes won the confectionery section.

Rich Mooney won the photography section, which was holiday themed this year.

There was also a children’s section, which Lewis Quirk won with a boat crafted out of wood chips.

As a change from last year, Manx crafts were featured as part of the main show.

Marion Caine from the Ploughing Society said: ’Last Thursday was the 27th annual show, and it was the best turnout we’d ever had. We had a wonderful day for it.’

’Fortunately we managed to hand out the potato seeds for the big spud competition two days before the lockdown began, and of course there were concerns throughout the year that the whole event would not be able to go ahead.’

This year, the charity which the society chose to raise funds for was the Manx Blind Welfare Society.
