A young motorcyclist has been banned from driving and fined after crashing into the back of an off-duty policeman’s car.
Phillip Nyamande, 23, of The Level, Colby, admitted careless driving, having no insurance and a licence offence.
He was banned for six months and fined £650.
Prosecutor Roger Kane told the court how, on October 11, the police officer was driving his Nissan and was stationary at Marathon Road in Douglas.
As he waited at a junction, Nyamande’s Sinnis Harrier motorcycle slid into the back of his car.
When he got out of the car, Nyamande ran off leaving the bike behind.
Nyamande was later located and told police he had ‘made off’ because he knew he didn’t have insurance or a licence.
No damage was caused to the car but Nyamande’s provisional licence was said to have expired in 2015.
Defence advocate Stephen Wood said that his client had not yet passed his CBT.
‘He had borrowed the bike from a friend who wished to sell it,’ said the advocate.
‘He took it for a spin round the block. Conditions were wet.
‘He lost control and in an effort to stop the bike goes down and skids before hitting the car.’
Mr Wood went on to say that his client was an apprentice joiner but had recently lost his employment.
‘He apologised for his error of judgement,’ said Mr Wood.
‘He hadn’t driven very far, it was a round the block exercise that unfortunately went wrong.’
Deputy High Bailiff Jayne Hughes said: ‘You shouldn’t have been on the road at all. You don’t drive on any road in the Isle of Man without insurance.
Nyamande was also ordered to pay £125 prosecution costs.
