It’s often the case that some things are worth waiting for and, in the case of one popular local band, waiting a couple of years at least.
However, thankfully the long wait for the debut album from Biskee Brisht is soon to be over.
The unique pop-folk group, who play original songs sung in both Manx and English, are set to release their long-awaited first album on Friday, July 17.
Having already released four singles from the album in the lead up to the launch, the group had intended to release ’Stand In The Sea’ during March.
However, as the lockdown restrictions hit home and gigs were being cancelled across the island, the group were forced to push the launch date back.
The group, led by singer Ruby Biscoe-Taylor and guitarist David Kinley, accordionist John Kaighin, a brass section featuring James and Django Kinley, Matt Brewster on bass and violin and percussionist Felipe Kowalczuk, had started work on the album in early 2018.
The lengthy process to capture their sound, which includes a dizzying array of instruments and layering the tracks up took until February 2019 to finish before the final mixing could take place.
’I’m just so happy to be able to get the album out,’ said singer Ruby.
’We were all ready to have ’Stand In the Sea’ out earlier this year.
’But as soon as we were allowed back to play in the pubs, we were determined to salvage something out of the summer.’
Biskee Brisht, who take their influences from groups and singers such as Beirut, First Aid Kit, Laura Marling, have already released four singles from the album, ’Not Again’, ’Sick and Tired’, ’The Fall’ and ’This Won’t End Well’, and many will already be familiar with the group’s catchy and up-beat sound.
’I suppose we sound like a mash-up between the Ronettes and modern folk groups’, said Ruby.
’That is kind of the sound we are going for.
’I love the catchy choruses and the big moments that everyone can sing along with, that is typical of the 60s sound. The whole album will be full of big, catchy songs.
’I like to write tunes and melodies that get stuck into people’s heads. Real ear worm-type music.’
They had originally intended to spend the summer of 2020 getting to as many festivals in the UK as possible, but are now looking at playing as many home gigs as they can get.
’Stand In The Sea’ will be available from tomorrow on iTunes or bandcamp for 7.99 or to stream through Apple Music, Spotify and Amazon music.
The CD is available to buy from the band themselves at gigs or by contacting them through the their Facebook page.
