The BBC’s prestigious gardening programme, Gardeners’ World, has been filming in the Isle of Man for what could be the first time.
Presenter Frances Tophill visited the Laxey and Lonan Allotment to meet organic gardener, soap maker, beekeeper, and green living enthusiast Tanya Anderson.
Tanya’s Lovely Greens blog provides advice on ideas on growing organic herbs, vegetables and fruit and then creatively using them in the home and kitchen.
During 10 hours of filming, Tanya shared tips on growing plants for skincare and showed how easily they can be added to a small garden.
She also shared how beekeeping figures into making natural beauty, and how to use plants and flowers to make beauty recipes.
Frances took on her first allotment this year and its progress is being shared on Gardeners’ World.
As part of the story, she’s visiting several inspirational allotments around Britain to get ideas for her own garden.
She said: ’I’ve been waiting a long time to get an allotment and I finally have one.
’And then Gardeners’ World have jumped on the bandwagon and have started filming it with me. It means that I get to go all over the country and meet lots of lovely people who are doing amazing, inspiring things with their allotments.’
Tanya’s message with Lovely Greens is to ’live simply, grow your own, make natural things’ and the allotment plays a big part in that.
Her garden and ideas show that anyone can subscribe to a natural and handmade lifestyle even with small and rented spaces.
She said: ’Growing calendula and other incredible skin care plants was the inspiration for starting my business.
’It’s grown and flourished in the island but I also share tips on how to grow and make handmade beauty through my website and YouTube channel.
’I was contacted by Gardeners’ World because I’ve become the go-to person for growing beauty herbs in an allotment setting and using them to make natural soap and skincare.’
The segment will feature in an episode of Gardeners’ World set to air at 9pm today (Wednesday).
American-born Tanya Anderson moved to the Isle of Man in early 2010.
She’s the owner and face of Lovely Greens, a local business that includes her popular DIY blog, YouTube channel, local soap making lessons and creative workshops, and a line of handmade soaps, lip balms, and skin care.
Tanya is also secretary of the Laxey and Lonan Allotment Association and a beekeeper.
