Applications are now open for the 2017 Appleby Academy.

The academy is aimed at upper sixth form students and seeks to give young people real life experience of working with an international organisation. Over the course of the 12-week programme, and with help from a mentor, students present their ideas on how they would meet a particular business challenge for the chance to win a paid summer placement with Douglas law firm Appleby.

Previous topics have included increasing staff integration, IT security and corporate social responsibility.

The scheme is run by Appleby in partnership with Junior Achievement Isle of Man.

Kezia Lightfoot, marketing and business development manager at Appleby’s Isle of Man office, said: ’We are excited to launch the Appleby Academy for the sixth year.

’The programme aims to empower students to build their skills by engaging them in real life business challenges. Whether students are planning to go to university or stay on island, it offers an opportunity for students to gain relevant work experience and to learn skills which will be beneficial throughout any career.’

Lizzie Beard, winner of the Appleby Academy 2016, said: ’The Appleby Academy was a lot of hard work, but I would definitely recommend it to anybody considering a career in law, marketing, HR or finance.

’It has been such a worthwhile experience that was tailored to me. Everybody was welcoming and friendly and I appreciate the opportunities that this scheme has afforded me.

’Through working in a variety of departments across Appleby I have been able to gain insight into life at a real law firm - and it did not disappoint.

’This placement has not only made me feel much more prepared for starting my law degree, but also a lot more excited.’

Sue Cook, chief executive at Junior Achievement Isle of Man, said: ’Junior Achievement is grateful to Appleby and its staff for its continued support, which gives sixth form students the chance to work with an international organisation and develop abilities which employers seek.’
