Port St Mary Dental has appointed Dr Martyn Dyson as its new lead dentist.

A native of Manchester, Dr Dyson started out his career in healthcare as a registered nurse, specialising in intensive care for more than 20 years.

He gained his diploma in general intensive care and a BSc in nursing before moving into education, where he was a lecturer in nursing at Manchester Metropolitan University.

During his tenure at the university he gained the higher degree of Master of Education and became a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, participating in academic exchanges to universities in Europe.

After missing clinical practice, Dr Dyson returned to nursing, but soon decided to retrain as a dentist, gaining a Bachelor of Dental Surgery degree at Peninsula Dental School in Plymouth.

Since qualifying, Dr Dyson has worked as a general dental practitioner in Manchester and Cumbria, and also as the dentist at the prison in Strangeways, Manchester, a maximum-security facility in the heart of the city.

As the prison’s only dentist, Dr Dyson had to be confident and competent in performing all dental procedures to avoid unnecessary movement of inmates.

In the wake of Covid-19, Dr Dyson and his wife Alison decided to have a change of lifestyle and relocated to the Isle of Man.

In addition to general, family-based dentistry, Dr Dyson also enjoys oral surgery, short-term orthodontics, facial aesthetics and prosthetics (dentures).

However, he specialises in treating patients with high levels of anxiety.

Martyn has specialist training in anxiety management and dental sedation techniques.

The speciality of conscious sedation gives patients, who would avoid dental treatment due to fear and anxiety, the opportunity to engage with a dentist in caring for their oral health. Currently this is achieved through oral and inhalation sedation which puts the patient into a deeply relaxed state, where they won’t feel any anxiety, discomfort or pain.
