Robinson’s has announced plans to continue reducing its use of plastic food packaging in 2020.

The family-run retailer has already made sweeping changes in its outlets over the last year in response to widespread customer demand.

A partner of UNESCO Biosphere Isle of Man, Robinson’s has planned ways to reduce the environmental impact of its food supply and presentation before rolling out the changes through its stores during 2019.

Large quantities of internally wrapped product packaging has now been replaced by Vegware, a 100% biodegradable alternative.

Other changes include swapping plastic for paper bags at loose fruit and vegetable stands; replacing plastic forks with wooden ones in pre-prepared dishes such as salads; offering plastics recycling points in stores; and trialling a plastics-free retail zone in the Shoprite on Victoria Road in Douglas.

Ross Williamson, director of retails, said: ’During 2019, we’ve made great strides to reduce the use of plastics across the organisation and have already made plans for further progress in 2020.

’We’re continually working with our packaging suppliers to find the best substitutions, like Vegware.’

Robinson’s’ initiatives for the new year include using increasing the number of product ranges covered by eco-friendly packaging; completely phasing out plastic roller bags and expanding its plastics-free zones for customers.

Mr Williamson added: ’We will also work with local suppliers to help them transition from plastic and put pressure on suppliers to use alternatives in their pre-packaging.

’Keeping our food miles as low as possible and maximising our use of local produce is also a key part of our environmental commitment.’
