Microgaming has marked the first anniversary of its new headquarters with the burial of a time capsule.

Newly promoted chief executive John Coleman celebrated the milestone alongside staff at the software giant’s Isle of Man campus by placing a time capsule underneath the building’s entrance.

To be opened in 30 years, the capsule contains unique mementos curated from suggestions by staff to commemorate significant events for the company.

Vacuum sealed and specially treated to prevent the items tarnishing, the metal capsule included a series of photographs showcasing company highlights, such as staff volunteer days, awards and the first group photo taken at the new offices when the building opened in July 2017.

It also includes a PlayItForward volunteer’s shirt in honour of the company’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative, plus various local and international articles from the past year, including Sixty Two being named in a list of “The 10 Coolest offices of 2017” which was published in The Telegraph.

Built with staff in mind, the firm’s second office in the island allows for the rapid expansion of Microgaming and Derivco Isle of Man.

The five-storey office now houses more than 300 employees, growing from 231 since it opened in 2017.

John Coleman, Microgaming chief executive, told Business News: ‘It is incredibly important for us to mark our first year at Sixty Two.

‘This time capsule captures a snapshot of our campus, our staff and the amazing culture we have fostered here in the Isle of Man for future generations to look back on.

‘Most importantly, this moment serves as a reminder to our future selves of our unique heritage and the people who have made this building more than just a place to work – it is truly a campus to be proud of.’

The project has taken four years to complete and staff are now at work in the multi-million pound building.

One of the highlights of the reception area is a periscope through which visitors can enjoy a 360 degree view of the island.

At the time of the opening of the new building, next door to the old HQ which is still operating the Roger Raatgever, who was CEO at the time, told Business News: ‘It’s incredible to think that when we set up Microgaming in the island back in 2001 there were just six staff. Now we are a campus in the heart of Douglas, with two large offices, and best of all they are connected by a sky bridge, which was a must for me! It’s an exciting new chapter for Microgaming and I’m immensely proud of what we achieved in our home.’

Microgaming was intent on using Manx-based businesses and workforce wherever possible, including Auldyn Construction Limited, Bell Burton Associates, Curtins, March Consultants Limited and SMS (IOM) Ltd. In addition, local architects, Savage & Chadwick took the lead role in the design of the building.

John Coleman took on his new role as CEO recently having previously served as chief financial officer for the company.

In a statement at the time, the company said that Mr Coleman has played ‘a central role in the operational running of the business in recent years’.

Speaking about his new role, Mr Coleman said: ‘I am honoured to be leading Microgaming.

‘This is a momentous time for the business, as we face exciting new opportunities in the years ahead.’

Meanwhile, Microgaming named his predecessor Roger Raatgever as executive chairman of Apricot Investments.

This is the new name of Microgaming Software Systems Limited.
