People are flocking to get away from it all on the Calf of Man.
It’s hardly the Ritz but it appears people are prepared to stay in a self-catering hostel and bunkhouse style accommodation on the tiny island off the south west coast.
It is made clear to visitors that accommodation is basic with shared bathroom facilities for up to eight visitors at a time.
A spokesman for Manx National Heritage said: ’People stay on the Calf for many different reasons - for some it is a destination to enjoy the birdlife, flora and fauna, while for others, it’s a peaceful retreat, an opportunity to study in an unspoilt natural environment and an opportunity for time away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.’
The spokesman added: ’During 2020, we had to cancel a number of bookings because of the Covid-19 pandemic. ’Some were transferred to 2021, resulting in reduced availability during the season, although this always books up very quickly.
’Accommodation on the Calf is fully booked for the 2021 summer season, with the residential courses offering the only remaining opportunity to stay overnight on the Calf during the 2021 summer season.’
Meanwhile wardens have returned to the bird obervatory on the Calf of Man.
There are two paid wardens on the Calf: Aron Sapsford (ornithological warden) and Daniel Woollard (estate warden). Both are contracted to work on the Calf via the Manx Wildlife Trust, who operate the observatory on behalf of MNH. Aaron and Daniel are currently supported by three volunteers: Robert Fisher (volunteer assistant ornithological warden) and Mollie Kirk (volunteer assistant estate warden) and Christa Worth (volunteer).
Other opportunities to volunteer on the Calf may arise throughout the summer and anyone interested should contact [email protected]
The spokesman said: ’Whilst we are fully booked for this summer, the newly introduced courses offer a great chance to stay on the Calf of Man, learn more about the work undertaken by Manx National Heritage and Manx Wildlife Trust and enjoy a staycation with a difference.’
Day visits to the Calf are also available via private charter from Port Erin and Port St Mary.
Residential courses, lectures and virtual events include:
l May 7 and May 10: ’An Introduction to Birdwatching on the Calf of Man’, a three night course.
lMay 10 May 11: ’Meet the Manxies - An Introduction to the Manx Shearwater’, an overnight, two day course offering the opportunity to join the Calf of Man wardens.
